18 PhD positions available in the MSCA DN ANT project

Applications are invited for 18 PhD positions (“Doctoral Candidates”, DCs) to be funded by the Marie-Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network “ANT – Embedded AI Systems and Applications” within the Horizon Europe programme of the European Commission.

This Doctoral Network (DN) project ANT aims to train a network of 18 excellent DCs by addressing the fundamental challenges of Embedded AI and accelerating the development of Embedded AI systems and applications through an innovative and interdisciplinary research and training program. ANT consists of four interconnected Work Packages (WPs) that encompass different aspects of Embedded AI. WP1 tackles the challenges in designing low-footprint standalone Embedded AI models under resource constraints and with diverse contexts and evolving environments. WP2 goes beyond standalone Embedded AI and designs innovative distributed and scalable learning solutions for heterogeneous Embedded AI networks under energy and bandwidth constraints. WP3 enhances the trustworthiness of Embedded AI with explainability, robustness, security, and privacy. ANT concludes in WP4 with a concerted effort to transfer fundamental research contributions to industry-relevant applications in autonomous robotics, underwater IoT, mobile healthcare, and smart farming, boosting Europe’s position in the global AI market both from a talent and a technological perspective. These interdisciplinary and inter-domain research training, along with the comprehensive soft-skills training (spanning from presentation skills to intellectual property, marketing, and economics, etc.) will make ANT’s 18 DCs highly employable in various industries, academia, or public government bodies, and will position the EU at the forefront of the emerging revolution of Embedded AI on Things.

Potential applicants need to meet the following three eligibility criteria fully:

  • Early-Stage Researchers (DCs): The DCs shall, at the time of recruitment by the host organisation, be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree. Full-time equivalent research experience is measured from the date when the researcher obtained the degree entitling him or her to embark on a doctorate, (either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the researcher is recruited) even if a doctorate was never started or envisaged. Part-time research experience will be counted pro-rata.
  • Conditions of the DCs’ international mobility: The DCs are required to undertake trans-national mobility (i.e., move from one country to another) when taking up the appointment. At the time of selection by the host organisation, the DCs must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment. Short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account.
  • English Proficiency Requirement: The DCs must demonstrate proficiency in both written and spoken English to fully benefit from the network training program.

Application Deadline: February 14, 2025, AoE
